If you’re not sure whether something is an emergency, call. We’d rather hear from you.
If it’s a permanent (adult) tooth, time matters. Pick it up by the top, not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly with water; don’t scrub it. If you can, gently put it back in the socket and have your child bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in a cup of milk. Then call us right away.
If it’s a baby tooth, don’t try to put it back in, since that can harm the adult tooth underneath. Call us so we can check your child.
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water, hold a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling, and save any pieces you can find.
Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. A cold compress on the cheek can help. Don’t put aspirin or other pain medication directly on the gums.
Press firmly with clean gauze or a cloth. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 to 15 minutes of steady pressure, go to the emergency room.
